Story telling is an ancient form, through it we communicate and entertain, it can enrich our lives and give moral instruction. Whether through the spoken word or a visual narrative we enjoy piecing together clues and symbols to construct the story which lies beneath the surface appearance.
So it is when looking at Irene Jones’ paintings. The eyes engage us, their dress and head wear, hat, turban, ribbon or garland, offer clues as to their situation. Objects and symbols help us decipher each character’s story whilst minute details undo perfection and hint at a sensual inner life. Led by instinct layered on many years of practice Irene paints with immense skill and sensitivity, but most of all from her heart.
