Angela Charles
Angela Charles gained a BA from Goldsmith's College in Fine Art /Textiles. After travelling she returned to exhibit in her home town of Brighton in 2000. She still regularly shows here as well as with galleries in London and across the south west where she now lives.
Since moving to Somerset in 2001 the landscape of the south west has been her key inspiration. Working from pen sketches and notes, her paintings represent a memory of a location rather than a direct response to a place. At the beginning her work was collage based and it is still the surface of things which interests Angela - the surface of her subjects and of her paintings. Her base of spray-primed aluminium or wooden board allows for a smooth ground where every texture is the artist's. Scratching marks through clear expanses of colour Angela becomes absorbed in the composition and mark making and finds the painting will take over and develop its own life as she seeks to express her awe at the landscape.
