Gemma Bee
Gemma has a fascination for the rich variety the natural world provides; it is an inspiration for her work.
A degree in printed textiles gave Gemma the experience in drawing she now uses as the foundation for creating her felted sculptures. After studying an animal's skeleton and anatomy she begins by 'sketching' the 3d shapes onto a wire armature.
Adding the “body’ is a long process, slowly matting together fibres by continuously jabbing wool fleece with a barbed needle. The fleece from various breeds of sheep and alpaca, together with other animal fibre provide a variety of textures to describe the animal. There are no short cuts to the process, no patterns, which makes each piece truly unique.
