Jennie was raised in the Scottish Borders, her early creative influences came from the rich traditions and folklore of the region. Growing up she read the dark fairytales of the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen. She was mesmerized by the evocative illustrations of Czech artist Jiri Trnka who would influence her illustrating style and practice for many years. Folklore combined with nature are her biggest influences; daily walks provide an eclectic collection of foraged flora and fauna.
Jennie works predominantly in clay hand building most of the pieces using porcelain and often parian – both unforgiving and technically challenging materials but ultimately satisfying to handle. All of the ceramic decals are created from Jennie’s own pressed flower and leaf collection.
