Phil Davies was born in West Yorkshire, after a BA from Loughborough College he completed an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art in 1981. He was a senior lecturer at Brighton University for 20 years. During which time he showed in London and Bath and was twice included in the John Moores exhibition.
Phil retired from education and moved to Somerset; soon after, personal circumstances meant there was a hiatus in his painting career. His work from the last 10 years has not been shown and he is only now re entering the world of exhibiting. The works shown are previously unseen and date from 2010 - 2016.
Phil describes his work using the language of the theatre, saying he creates from writing through production and direction to performance. His works are in fact well described as pictoral theatre. Metaphor plays a part in these works and the sense of a painting may need to be teased out from the immediately evident image.
